I would love to tell you about the first dog who stole my heart. Her name was Lotta. She was a German Shepherd. She did not belong to me but to my aunt, who lived within a 10-minute walking distance from us. I was then in middle school and was not allowed to have dogs due to my asthma and allergies (yes, I still have both). Lotta and I would go for long walks. She was so sweet and intelligent! She always seemed to know when to be silly, and when to sit next to me in mutual silence. Unfortunately, her family decided not to keep her and my family did not take her.
She was given to a local military outlet. Not to be a war dog, just to be a pet.
This story is true. It sounds like a Hollywood script but it is a true story.
She dug herself from under the fence. She was miles away and found her way home. We have absolutely have no idea how. No idea. Her family was gone on vacation and she eventually came to us and howled outside of our house. When she came in, her feet were raw and bloody. She was exhausted, tired, hungry and thirsty. She was asleep within minutes. She had so much love, faith, and dedication to her family. She is my forever inspiration.
In 2011 I quit my comfortable corporate job and opened Understanding Our Dogs LLC.
I have been training dogs since 1998 and used mainstream methods. Once I began to study the science of applied animal behavior and learning theory, I chose to advance my education by enrolling in the prestigious Karen Pryor Academy for Animal Training & Behavior. The Academy is built on decades of scientific research and practical development by behavior analysts, ethologists and event-marker trainers around the world.
My trainer's "toolbox" contains the knowledge gained through elite yearly continued education, and personal experience collected for over 20 years of working with dogs of many breeds and personalities.
