Scence-Based Dog Training

Our training program is built on decades of scientific research and practical development by behavior analysts, ethologists and event-marker trainers around the world.

Stereotypes

We try to avoid stereotyping dog breeds and their abilities.

No Two Dogs are the Same

No two dogs are the same. A good trainer must be knowledgeable and flexible.

Never Too Early or Too Late

It is never too late or too early to begin working with your dog.

Welcome to Understanding Our Dogs LLC

I am Lena Skov, MBA, KPA, and I am the dog trainer covering a very large area from Charlotte, NC to Kings Mountain, NC and from Statesville, NC to Rock Hill, SC. I have vast experience of 15+ years of working with dogs of many breeds and personalities, as well as formal education. I graduated from the prestigious Karen Pryor Academy for Animal Training and Behavior (educational institution, not to be confused with a chain operation).

I offer in-home Dog Training and Behavior Modification services, which include a wide variety of custom-tailored programs. Among them, you will find puppy training, basic dog training to behavior modification. Many of my cases involve dogs with anxiety, fear, guarding, aggression, reactivity, just to name a few.

I also offer Nosework Group Classes. Nosework opens a new dimension in your relationship with your dog. Imagine empowering your dog's primal ability to locate scent and channeling it into a fun activity you can do together. Nosework is great for dogs of all sizes and dispositions. We practice with one dog at a time, making it an ideal environment for fearful and reactive dogs.

Regardless of the training venue, my methods are science-based and focused on positive reinforcement. Please visit Meet Lena and Training Philosophy pages for more information.

I no longer use shock collars or choke chains as my tools. The issue with shock collars is that not only they can be unnecessarily harsh but, more importantly, once they come off the dog usually becomes non-compliant. I am a positive but not a permissive trainer, and I do believe in having rules, but I prefer following through without unnecessary coercion.

In my experience, these are the critical skills every dog should know:

  1. Impulse-control (self-control) around food or toys in your hands (no biting, no jumping).
  2. Understanding mine/yours especially with items on the ground.
  3. Come when called (a safety skill we should practice with our dogs throughout their lives).
  4. Walk on a loose leash (I recommend Freedom No-Pull harness) and pay attention to you.
  5. Go to place (mat or dog bed) and settle.

My current rates are $490 for 5 sessions. This price includes access to my password protected website portal with training videos and instructions.

I work prepaid. If you are unhappy with my services, please email me up to 24 hours from 1st session and ask for the refund of the remainder of the package. Click on the PayPal buttom below to make your payment. Once payment is done, I will contact you and provide a link to my scheduling calendar, where you can book your first appointment.
